Some of our favorites...

While the vast majority of Americans consider themselves unprejudiced, many of us unintentionally make snap judgments about people based on what we see—whether it’s race, age, gender, religion, sexuality, or disability. This may be a significant reason many people in the U.S. report they feel discriminated against. Subconscious prejudice—called “implicit bias”—has profound implications for how we view and interact with others who are different from us. It can hinder a person’s ability to find a job, secure a loan, rent an apartment, or get a fair trial, perpetuating disparities in American society. The Love Has No Labels campaign challenges us to open our eyes to our bias and prejudice and work to stop it in ourselves, our friends, our families, and our colleagues.

Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music.

"As we made our way around the world we encountered love and hatred.  We met people both rich and poor, black and white, and from innumerable religious groups and ideologies.  Over the course of our journey it became very clear that as a human race we need to transcend from the darkness to the light, and that music will be our weapon of the future.

This Song Around the World features musicians who have seen and overcome conflict and hatred with love and perseverance.  “We don’t need more trouble, what we need is love.”  The spirit of Bob Marley always lives on!"

Known fondly as SLOMO, Dr. John Kitchin was a successful neurologist. However, he felt as if his life was a rat race – trapped in a routine that didn’t make him happy. There was emptiness inside. Dr. Kitchin abandoned his career and all of his trappings of material success, including a Ferrari, an exotic animal farm and a huge mansion high in the hills. Now, he skates all day, every day, in slow motion, at Pacific Beach. People know him as SLOMO. The child inside him is very happy: “The people that love SLOMO are cheering for one person that got away, that escaped, and got to real freedom where he skates all day, doesn’t apologize – he’s simply doing what he wants to…”

Carry On - We've all heard about someone figuratively carrying an individual or a team on their shoulders. However, Dartanyon Crockett and Leroy Sutton introduce a completely new dimension. Watch how these two best friends carry each other through life and discover that the human spirit can triumph over the most difficult obstacles. These two best friends have inspired more than each other. They are also an inspiration to a community in which many individuals have to overcome tough odds to advance in life.

More from "Playing for Change" -

“Don’t Worry” is the first original Song Around the World featured by Playing For Change.  It was written byPierre Minetti in Barcelona, Spain and speaks of the unity we all share on this planet.  As the song states: “Let’s don’t worry my brother, in this world we are all the same, we must find peace…”  This video features over 20 musicians from 4 continents who had never met in person, but are connected through the message and the music.

Casa de Paz (House of Peace)

36th Avenue in the Fruitvale district of East Oakland, California, is the turf of three major gangs. Yet the residents of Casa de Paz never lock their doors. Anchored by Pancho Ramos Stierle and Adelaja Simon, Casa de Paz is part of a group of several homes that form an intentional community of peace and nonviolence in an area rife with structural and physical violence. In order to serve their community, they live with the people - laugh with them, cry with them, and eat with them. They embody "giftivism" - practicing radical acts of generosity that changes the world, one heart, one home, one block at a time.

"The opposite of poverty is justice" - Bryan Stevenson.

Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer who spends most of his time in jails, prisons, on death row or in low-income communities, shares some hard truths about America's criminal justice system, starting with a massive imbalance along racial lines: a third of young black men between the ages of 18 and 30 has been incarcerated at some point in their lives. Bryan urges the TED audience to think about our identity as a nation. When we don't think or care about the poor, we diminish the positive in our lives. In too many countries, the opposite of poverty is not wealth - the opposite of poverty is justice.

From TED@NYC - July 2014

For Clint Smith, inspiration comes from his students. The writer and educator draws on his and his students’ lives to create slam poetry that blends art and activism. A 2014 National Poetry Slam champion, whose work blends art and activism, Smith gives performances with humor, humanity and humility, touching on themes like poverty, social justice and the pains of being a kid.

"We spend so much time listening to the things people are saying that we rarely pay attention to the things they don't," ... a short, powerful piece from the heart, about finding the courage to speak up against ignorance and injustice.
